Another great win on the road last night, beating FC St Helens 2-1 in the Macron Cup.
From the kick-off it was a dominant first half performance, with the passing and movement causing FC all kinds of problems and the confidence was flowing through the team.
We took a deserved lead through a gem of a finish from the impressive Sam Burns after Michael Fitzgerald intercepted a pass down the right and brought the ball forward and moved it on to Sam who let a well-placed shot go from the edge of the box, and it floated over the keeper, a cracking effort.
We were on the front foot and getting in some really good areas with the lads linking up with some neat and tidy football, Lewis Buckley, Tom Douglas and all having chances with Jordan Barrow having two big opportunities also, his first a thunderous strike that thankfully for the keeper was down his throat before Baz had one on a plate for him, but that effort had zero power and was easy for the keeper to stop this time.
Right on the stroke of half-time FC St Helens showed they were still a massive threat with their skipper being put through on goal but like Barrow’s second attempt it was a weak effort.
HT 1-0
Second half we came out well and looked like the game was going to carry on in a similar pattern to the first, Lewis Buckley had a great chance to extend the lead with the keeper stranded, but he chose to dink a finish instead of just smashing it home, and it went over the bar.
A few misplaced passes and with lads dropping the running levels we had in the first half we seen FC slowly come back into the game and after a couple of half chances they got an equalizer on 70 minutes.
All credit to the lads they got back to it and started to dominate the ball again and after Lewis Buckley seen his next opportunity well saved the ball come straight back to him and he cut one back for Tom Douglas, and it was a quality first time finish from Dougie to put us back In front.
We had the confidence and swagger back, but one or two moments of overconfidence at the back seen us give FC a couple of opportunities. Thankfully, they were wasted.
Sam Burns had a glorious chance to wrap it up, in truth he would have been better to put Bucko in who was in the better position.
FT 2-1
A job more than well done on a bitterly cold night and with only 13 players available the lads had to put a big shift in and they did just that to put us in the last 16 of Macron Cup.
The McNamara’s Sports Bar MOM went to Sam Burns who was quality with the ball at his feet and first half especially you couldn’t get it off him, capped another great performance with a quality goal.
As always a massive thanks to all who joined us last night on what was a freezing night for footy with the the pitch frosting over as the game went on, great support for a midweek game yet again.
Its back on the road Saturday as we travel to Blackpool to face Squires Gate, another big performance needed if we’re to end the month of November with another big win.
We Go Again.
